To follow is information for our families about their decision on which model for returning to school next month you would like for your student. At our district’s Reopening website, there is information about the three options – (1) Traditional on campus here at Gulf; (2) mySchool Online with scheduled classes each day taught electronically by our Gulf teachers; or (3) Virtual Through Pasco eSchool, a fully virtual school separate from Gulf High and taught online by eSchool teachers. Each option has its strengths, and families should decide together what is best for their student. As high schoolers, I encourage you to include the student in the process.
Both Traditional on campus and mySchool Online are fully run by Gulf High School.
Traditional on campus means a typical school day in classrooms with our GHS faculty and staff. We will promote social distancing, encourage wearing masks, and have a great deal of cleaning going on throughout the day. We will have lunches as usual but with seating a bit more spread out. Please note that classrooms will be set up in rows for the most part so that students are seated several feet apart. We will observe 6-feet when possible.
mySchool Online will also follow a daily schedule of class sessions. Your Gulf High teachers will be live with you online to offer direct instruction and activities. The classes will be held as a combination of Zoom discussions and other work in Canvas or in Zoom. Students must be logged in to the classes as scheduled each school day. We will have classes for all levels, honors, AP, IB, and many electives. For families concerned about being back on campus, but wanting a traditional feel to school with teachers, other student interactions, and teachers keeping students on track, mySchool Online may be a great option to choose.
For those considering Virtual Through Pasco eSchool, please remember that this means full enrollment in a school that is NOT Gulf High for students taking all 6 courses. Thus, your student becomes part of Pasco eSchool virtual school. It is a nationally recognized online school and provides a solid experience for students who can keep to a set of commitments with less prompting. The learning schedule is very flexible, it is all through Canvas, and students have access to their teachers by telephone and email. This is a good option for students who are organized, self-motivated, wish to make choices regarding when to work, how much to do at any given time, and who seek that flexibility in their day and weekend. Important: The students who find success with this are very strong independent readers. There are ESE supports offered but they are not identical to how handled through traditional school or mySchool Online.
