Here’s what the Tampa Tribune has to say about our football prospects:

Gulf finished only 1-9 in 2013, but featured one of the most athletic teams on the west side of the county. Coach Jason Messamore has many athletes at his disposal, especially on offense with quarterback Avery Welch, Chance Belloise, Yanquier Bastian, Uly Velez, Malik Cobb, RaiQwan Hayes, Deandre Hopkins and Morgan Smith returning to the team this spring.

An interesting name Messamore said will be back is Keshaun Peters, who didn’t play last fall due to academic reasons. Peters competed with Welch for the starting quarterback position last season and it looked like Gulf would be platooning Peters and Welch.

With another productive spring, Gulf might take a turn in the right direction under Messamore, who’s headed into his second season as coach.

Gulf hosts Weeki Wachee for spring football game May 23.
