Shane Gillen, a junior representing Gulf High last week as a member of the Florida All-State 11th & 12th Grade Band at the annual Florida Music Educators Association’s Clinic-Conference in Tampa, earned first chair at the auditions held on Jan. 10. This was his third year in a row representing Gulf at this state event. According to GHS Director of Bands Bill Rutherford, this makes Shane the best bassoon player in the entire state of Florida. He performed in a concert Saturday night where he was featured as a soloist in the second piece, The Pines of Rome. Shane is 17 years old and is the son of Karen and Sean Gillen of New Port Richey.
