Pasco County Schools is launching a Citizens’ Academy to educate the public on the operation of a public school system.
The Pasco Schools Citizens’ Academy will consist of seven monthly meetings beginning in August 2018. Three meetings will be held during the day and four meetings will take place in the evening. Mornings will consist of school visits around the county, while evenings will consist of classroom lessons on budget, school choice, planning, construction and maintenance, transportation, and school safety, to name a few.
“We want our parents, community members, and business leaders to learn what it takes to operate a public school district,” says Kurt Browning, Pasco County superintendent of schools. “Pasco County Schools educates 75,000 students and has an operating budget of $1.2 billion. We think it’s important for Pasco taxpayers to see first-hand the many facets of educating our children.”
Each Citizens’ Academy class will consist of 30 to 50 members from the community. The first class will start August 23. The final meeting and graduation is set for March 28.
