Jeff Miller has been named Gulf High School’s Teacher of the Year.

Mr. Miller teaches Geometry Honors, Algebra II, and Advanced Topics in Mathematics. He has been at Gulf since 1995.

The Teacher of the Year is selected by a vote of the faculty. Ms. Davis announced his selection on the GHS Morning News on Thursday. The video clip below (8 minutes in) shows Ms. Davis entering his classroom to tell him the news.

Mr. Miller has been a sponsor of the Math Honor Society, and in that capacity helped students prepare for numerous math competitions held on Saturdays at area high schools. He served on the board of the Florida Mu Alpha Theta for five years, editing the statewide math honor society newsletter. He wrote a test on the history mathematics which was used for a competition at a past national Mu Alpha Theta convention.

Mr. Miller is on the board of the West Pasco Historical Society and maintains a web site about Pasco County history for which he has been honored by the school board and the county commission. He also maintains the Gulf High web site and a web site on the history of mathematical terminology and symbols which is described by the British Society for the History of Mathematics as “very high quality” and “an excellent resource.”

Mr. Miller was born in Beckley, W. Va. He attended Duke University and USF. He also served in the U. S. Air Force, where he maintained electronic communications equipment.
