Gulf High Seniors, Courtney Corlett, Kristof Cseh, Arturo Leis-Pretto, Arizona Maki and Areti Papanikas, are five of thirty high school students have been named semifinalists for the 2018 Barnes Scholarship, sponsored by the Tampa Bay Times Fund. The scholarships, named after former Times Publishing Co. chairman and CEO Andrew Barnes, were established in 1999 to help high-achieving college-bound students with financial need and who have overcome significant obstacles.
The 30 students from Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Hillsborough counties were selected from a pool of 182 applicants — 134 girls and 48 boys — from 21 high schools. Finalists will be selected and interviewed in January, and the four winners will be announced in February. Recipients of the Barnes scholarship receive up to $60,000 to pay for four years at an accredited U.S. college or university.
