As part of the reunion for the Gulf High classes of 1924-67+, several Gulf alumni from the 1960s were given a tour of their old school on March 23. When they attended Gulf High, it was in the building on Louisiana Avenue that now houses Gulf Middle School. The tour was conducted by GMS Principal Stan Trapp.
The first photo shows members of the GHS Class of 1962, the first class to graduate from the Louisiana Avenue building, presenting Mr. Trapp with a plaque congratulating Gulf Middle on the 50th anniversary of the facility. Pictured are Mary Ann Conover Moore, Beva Stevenson Karay, and Candy Poole Lott (all GHS ’62) with Mr. Trapp. The second photo shows the plaque.
Other alumni who did the tour were Brad VanOchten (GHS ’67, in the black shirt), Mike VanOchten (GHS ’67, in the green shirt), Peggy Conover Knapp (GHS ’67, in the pink shirt), Adam Knapp (GHS ’61, with the beard), and their spouses. Knapp did not attend school at the Louisiana Avenue location; his class was the last to graduate from the first Gulf High location which is now Schwettman Education Center.
Several of the buildings that now comprise the GMS campus were not yet constructed when these alumni attended school here. The room now used for the band was the cafeteria originally. The gym was not built until 1966; basketball games were played at the older Schwettman site, outdoors.
A tour of the 1922-61 Gulf High School building is planned for next week.
