Lonnie “Buck” DeWitt, who has taught and coached at Gulf since the 1980s, has retired. Coach DeWitt most recently taught social studies and phys ed, but he taught driver education for many years. He was the head boys basketball coach in 2009-10 and 2010-11 and coached the JV team for nine seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was the girls varsity coach for three seasons starting in 1994. In an email, Dr. Knobl writes, “Buck is yet another ‘lifer’ that will be sorely missed by Gulf High School. I have known Buck for 20 years as an educator and coach and have so many fond memories of him. He can be described as a gentle and kind man who loves GHS and bleeds green like many of us! The dedication and love he has for our students, our staff, and our school cannot be overstated. I hope his health improves so he can visit often and attend ball games.”
