Many Gulf High School teachers wore yellow today (Sept. 8) to heighten awareness and educate others about the issue of suicide.

Sept. 5-11 is Suicide Prevention Week and Sept. 10 is World Suicide Day.

According to Susan Reed, our school social worker, suicide claimed 42,773 lives in 2014 in the United States alone, with someone dying by suicide every 12.8 minutes. A suicide attempt is made every minute of every day, resulting in nearly one million attempts made annually. In 2012, Pasco County ranked 4th in the state with the highest number of completed suicides. It is imperative that we continue to educate our community on this important cause.
