Alice B. Chang, a senior in Gulf’s International Baccalaureate program, has been named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Mr. Knobl made the announcement today in Alice’s period 6 IB Chemistry HL class taught by Ms. Peek. Alice is the daughter of Shoujin Zhang and Yuehua Yang of Odessa. She is not sure where she will attend college, but believes she will probably major in chemistry.

Posing in the picture with Alice are Ms. Peek, Alice’s chemistry teacher, and Dr. Lepley, the assistant principal for Gulf’s IB program.

Interesting facts about Alice: Her middle name is Beta, the Greek letter, so that her initials are ABC. Her father spelled her last name Chang instead of Zhang so that she would not be last in the alphabet. Alice’s father is a vice president of a fertilizer export company; her mother is a homemaker. Alice’s younger brother, Oliver Yang Chang, is a freshman in our pre-IB program. Alice has been a Gulf student in IB or pre-IB since the ninth grade. Before attending Gulf, she attended a private Catholic school. She has lived in Odessa for eight years, and earlier lived in Tampa.
