April Kelley, who has been a guidance counselor at Gulf since 1987, will retire at the end of the school year.

Mrs. Kelley is currently the guidance counselor for the International Baccalaureate students. In recent years she has been the counselor for other students also, based on their last names. She has also until recently been the guidance department chairperson.

Before coming to Gulf at the start of the 1987-88 school year, she was a business education teacher and guidance counselor at Middleburg High School in Middleburg, Florida, near Orange Park. Earlier she had taught business education at Hudson High School and in San Diego, Calfornia.

She is a graduate of USF with a BA degree in business education and a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling.

April McCullers was born in Tampa and grew up in Lutz. She was one of seven children, among whom are two sets of twins. She is a graduate of Chamberlain High School (which also is the alma mater of Jerry Young, long time Gulf teacher and coach).

She and her husband Ron live in North Tampa. He was a Naval officer, and the two of them have traveled a lot. They have a son, Jason, who is an attorney. They also have a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback named Maggie, a picture of which is displayed prominently on her desk.

Mrs. Kelley says she loves to garden, and that she and her husband hope to do some traveling in the future. She also plans to learn to play the piano.
