Name: Michael Bennett
Class of: 1979
Now living in: Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Miami, Florida

Michael Bennett, born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. to first generation Floridians, has spent most of his professional life in the food and hospitality industries. Michael began working for his family who owned and operated Fort Lauderdale’s first restaurant north of Sunrise Blvd., where he learned his great work ethic and respect for Florida food products. Michael’s grandfather was the family’s first restaurateur, operating petite south Florida restaurant purchased after emigrating from Ohio in the 1940’s.

Michael started cooking professionally at a Tampa Bay seafood restaurant, the New Orleans Oyster Bar, while attending the local college. He transferred to the Culinary Institute of America to pursue his true passion and then again found himself in Florida to complete his externship in budding village of New Port Richey, Florida.

After leaving the CIA, for most of the next 11 years, Michael’s lifestyle revolved around intense periods of kitchen management followed by months of O.J.T. under the tutelage from Miami’s most well known chefs. On each of these journeys – he sought out the most exotic and chic dining environments. During this time, Michael was fortunate enough to have catered to nearly all of Miami’s most fashionable clientel.

After 1991, the 26 year culinary landmark in Fort Lauderdale- the Left Bank recruited Michael to be it’s Executive Chef. The restaurant saw critical acclaim under Michael’s watch, earning rave reviews and Food and Wine accolades from the media and public alike. The restaurant received the Four Star AAA award, Mobil award in 2002 and Wine Spectator’s Grand Award of Excellence, also in 2002.

Michael’s culinary status has been highlighted in publications that include The New York Times, Ocean Drive Magazine, National Culinary Review (cover feature), Zagat Review (“best of”), “Where” Magazines’s Best of 2000 as well as many other local newspaper features. He has appeared on television cooking segments including The Today Show-South Florida, among others. Miami New Times magazine featured Michael as one of South Florida’s pivotal figures in the Florida’s exotic tropical food chefs.

Chef Bennett is a firm believer in giving back to the community and that includes his family roots are in South Florida, where he still resides with his wife Vicki and their two children. He has actively participated in dozens of local and national charities, benefiting many wonderful causes-some for hunger relief, others in search of cures, many of them to benefit children – his particular passion. Michael was the architect of the “Kids in Distress” chef’s campaign that feed and housed over 300 troubled families in South Florida.

Since leaving Left Bank in 2004, Michael opened the highly visible Solo on the Bay (see sidebar review). Formulating the areas first “Restro-Club” that was rated number 7 out of hundreds of South Florida niteclubs. Some of Michael’s past and present clients comprise celebrities from the entertainment industry including; Wilt Chamberlin, Roger Stubb, Oprah, Jayda and Will Smith, Michael Caine, Daryl Hanna, George Hamilton, Walter Cronkie, Morgan Freeman, Elton John, Madonna, Trina, Beyonce and others….

In August 2006, Michael exodus his family 1200 miles into the Caribbean, repositioning himself in the British West Indies to broaden his subsist vibe for the food he loves. After a year of investigating the region’s culinary attributes, he has ventured onto other Islands in the Caribbean. He is now on the “Forgotten Island” of St. Croix just 30 minutes away from San Juan. The Island is more spacious than others in this area-so Tropical-exotic produce has plenty of room to florish. A perfect place for Michael’s investigations into the EXOTIC cookery of the Caribbean!

Michael is the author of the “Underneath a Cloudless Sky” (as of yet unpublished) encompasses more than three years of tropical cookery enhancements. His next project most recent undertaking is a culinary-story book named; “In a land of Misfits, Pirates and Cooks”, a food preparation manuscript and authentic stories tome of how Caribbean gastronomy became legendary.

Comments: Hello all /waving

I just finished a big contract with the Pentagon and it looks like we have an opportunity to move home to NPR this summer. My mother-in-law has offered us a home in the old neighborhood (Bon Jovi – Who says you can’t go home?)

Our two youngest children Steven (15 in Nov) & Savanah (13) will be zoned for GHS. I spoke with the director of communications for Pasco County schools she has convinced me that GHS is doing fairly well implementing an IB program, etc… We apparently did very well in basketball and (she said) best Football season in history last year. I thought we had a fairly great year in ’76 & ’77 with Buzzsaw SHAW at Linebacker, etc..

Anyway wanted to warn you to start the BBQs and leave a light on for us… we should be home soon! Settled in time for our <gulp> 30 year reunion!

Just saying high to every one from Goof High of 79, hey Louie Crabtree, last time we met was at Mitty P. Lock your son was in a play or something back in the 90’s now he is graduating Wow!!

And also to Edgar Altom, glad to see you still playing in a band buddy, no more bleeding eardrums in your mom’s garage, I still be rockin as well!!

I have been married for eight years now and working at the Los Alamos national Lab in New Mexico.

Went back to Holiday Florida last couple years to help my folks out, man that place is so worn out looking hate to see it that way but all things must pass I guess.

I do miss tubing down the Weeki Wachee at the old river country that has been long gone as well seems the free stuff we had back then is no longer free.

Not much water in New Mexico but plenty of open space and snowy mountains to hike up.

One person I wish that could be with us still is Laurie Butt; I know some of you still remember her?

Any way don’t want to end on a sad note just wanted to let you guys know I still am alive love U All even the people I don’t remember.

God bless and don’t get to old to Rock~N~Roll!

Comments: Just spent a week in NPR, for those of you NOT in the area WOW! The place is growing HUGE in a short time!!!

New MONSTER homes on the River in NPR. Hiway 54 is almost unrecognizable. I remember when Decuebelis Road was a dirt road now it is like an 6 lane intersection.

I was there for bad news; my mom & dad both have cancer, doesn’t look good. Actually considering moving home to take care of them. Some might ask how you can hesitate; kids in school, jobs to consider and relocating a business or two I don’t know if you realize this but wages in Florida suc… well they are not the best.

Anyway the weather was horrid, the school itself has gotten bigger. There is a SONIC on Little Road, there is a hooters on 19 on the river. The city has done a GREAT job reviving the downtown area. you have to see it!!

Comments: It appears we lost one of our teachers and we did not notice…
Richard Holley, Math teacher for at least class of 1978/79/80 died in Feb 2003. (
He played guitar on the Gulf Goof days, claimed to be co-inventor of the Waa-Waa box (gives your voice a mechanical sound) and so many other things.
I never received an A in Mr. Holley’s class, but I always knew where I stood. He is one of a few teachers who you should easily remember if you had him.
One of my biggest regrets, is not having seen him after graduation to thank him for his memorable instruction.
Rest in peace my teacher. /ELA

NOTE to those planning the reunions, consider inviting our friends from Hudson classes of the same year at least for the informal first night mixer.
I recently moved 5 miles from the Pentagon (closer to work) in Alexandria, VA.

In my real job I’m the Director of Human Resources for a Florida-based paint manufacturer. But in my FUN job, I’m still involved in music…playing in an all-original modern rock band in Orlando. You can listen to our music at We play a few shows a month, so try to catch us if you’re in the Central Florida area. It would be great to see some old friends.

Comments: Just like to say hi to all the people I used to party with back in the day, I’m all grown up now with a wife & kid and a nerdy software developer job, but I still get to bust loose on the drums every weekend with a jazz/funk group called “Lane Change”. We play mostly in Tampa & Clearwater so come check us out if you live in the area. I had a great time at the class of 79’s 20 year reunion. For those that didn’t show, you missed a good party on friday night. Thanks to the reunion committee for getting so many people back together! Anyone reading this should pop open a new browser window and register yourself at while you’re reading through the rest of these messages, it’s a huge site with alumni listings for every school in the world..

Comments: Hi to all my fellow classmates of 1979. I cannot believe that it has been 20 years already! I can’t be 30 something I was only 17 yesterday! Oh well life goes on. I’m really sorry I missed seeing everyone at the 20 year reunion, but then again there’s always the big 25! It sounds like a good time was had by all. If anyone has downloaded pictures, please e-mail me. Or if anyone would just like to say hi, I would really love to hear from you. Let me know what you’re doing or how life is treating you.
As for me, I live in Milwaukee WI. I moved here in 1989 after my dad died. I have been doing some of the things I promised I’d do when I was in high school. Yes, I’m still into theater and singing and I occasionally get paid for it, but it is mostly voluntary. In addition to theater, I decided two years ago that I really needed to finish my bachelors degree. I started at a small private women’s college called Mount Mary. I am a double major in Public Relations and English Professional Writing. (Yes Joyce, I finally decided to put my imagination to use!)
In my spare time I freelance for a local paper and sing at the Basilica of St. Josephat. If any of you are ever in the Milwaukee area, I highly reccommend that you stop and visit it. The entire building was built at the turn of the century. The Basilica is 1/4 the size of St. Peters in Rome and built on the same premise. The excavation for the building was dug out by hand by Polish immigrants. Well I could go on forever, but if you are in the Milwaukee area and if you want to see it or visit me, let me know and I’ll make arrangements.
If any of you have lasted through this message, I’d love to hear from you, especially anyone from the classes of 1979 and 1978.
Hope to hear from you soon. (ps. Just a side note, this is my school e-mail and did I mention this college is run by nuns?? So anything you send, please keep it clean to slightly naughty!)
PPS Does anyone remember Steve Kuni or Shaun Cuff? If anyone knows how to contact them please let me know.

Comments: Class of ’79 20 year Continued…
Observation for those who have not been to a reunion… Many of those that went told us they considered not going for vanity reasons (GO, I tell you!) When you get there you will find that Age is a part of everyone…
Although there were a few exceptions to that rule, Mary Knight showed up for the formal and I swear to god as I sit here she looked as though she had not aged a single day. Elain Hudson Looked faboulous as did many, many others.
Val Sullivan, Karla Swenson and Mary Christie OH and Billy Crane were the Reunion committee, Thanks guys, I had a blast!!!
For those that don’t know, I hollered and screamed and kicked like a little kid about the reunion being on Father’s day weekend. The hotel could NOT keep the room cool, the DJ stunk…. But you know what? It didn’t matter, I honestly feel we could have met in a cow pasture and just as much fun.
Reunion Committee, my hat’s off to you all, you put up with all the bunk and got us together and that is what counts!
Cathy Holland and her Lovely Husband Roger Dombroski Necked in the Pool was a fine sight! That may have been after happy hour though… Oh we did have New Port Richey’s finest show up (too loud in the pool area at 4 A.M.) HINT, BIG HINT!!! If you are at a Class reunion in your HOME TOWN ALWAYS ask the cops if they went to your school!!! 2 out of 4 including the Police SGT were Gulf High School Alumni! One of them was Ken Berry’s brother (he didn’t show, but sent his brother to harass us, what is that?)
The fun truly never stopped and I wish I could have stayed. Many talk about moving back, Brian Willis said he was thinking of moving back from Colorado (where he drove from for the Reunion) to New Port Richey.
For those who have not been home in a while, we (NPR) now has there own Hooters! Are we coming up in the world or what? Oh also went to a GREAT Hot Rod show at Wing House (Hooter-like establishment with girls that are..uh, MORE qualified to work there than at Hooters!)
Oh and the Memory Book “May” still be for sale it was $20 at the shin-dig and $25 after… There were quite a few candid photos… Oh and if you were lucky you ended up with beads for dunking in the cooler, your head that is.., in the cooler… whatever it was fun!!! Enough from me, I want to hear from the lazy folk what didnt get to go! >;-)

Comments: Well the 20 year was AWESOME!!! A couple of surprises and a couple of disappointments… I personally feel if you got a special picture in the year book (class clown, most likely to…, Most bashful whatever…) you should be REQUIRED to show up to all of the reunions!!! (grin)
Thank the Abbotts for giving good room and beverages… Thank the Polino Twins for giving good Huggage… >;-P~
I could not possibly list everyone who went, there were 77 paid guests and a few others who crashed the party (thanks for coming by hook or crook!) Celeste Bergman (Class Prez) made a showing for the informal night (Friday) but did not show for the formal affair… Man there is so much to say… I’ll post this now and enter another one… (grin) ELA

Comments: Hey Ken, et. al. Glad to see we have a web-presence! I have been looking for Reunion information…I would like to thank for the following Class of ’79 information… It appears as though our classmate, Margaret Stewart, had most of the details. Reunion is planned for 6/18-20/99 and will be held at the Quality Inn (for reservations 800/282-1422) in New Port Richey. There is no phone contact or name available but you you are asked to send $35.00 for the reunion fee (prior to 4/1/99 which covers the buffet dinner on Sat eve. Fri eve and Sat aft are cash bar and no food as far as I know. )to: Gulf Class of 1979, P. O. Box 1763, Elfers, FL 34680. Sincerely hope this helps the Class of ’79 and any others who would like to attend! Semper Fidelis, ELA
