Dr. Paul P. Pollack, the Gulf High School valedictorian in 1999, is the author of a recently-published college textbook on number theory titled Not Always Buried Deep: A Second Course in Elementary Number Theory. Dr. Pollack graduated from the University of Georgia in 2003. He received his Ph. D. from Dartmouth College in 2008, for a thesis written under the supervision of Carl Pomerance.

He writes that his devotion to number theory stems from his experiences as a student at the Ross Summer Mathematics Program in 1998. In the foreword he thanks, among others, three of his middle and high school teachers, Daniel Phelon, Sharon Bellak, and Jeff Miller. The photo shows Paul at his Gulf High graduation with Mr. Miller and Ms. Bellak.
