For the second year in a row, Gulf girls and Gulf boys both won the district cross country championship. Gulf girls finished 47 points ahead of runner-up Ridgewood and Gulf boys finished 43 points ahead of second-place Frostproof at the cross country district competition on Oct. 30. Individually, Kari Grippo was first among the girls and Nick Buliga was first among the boys. Coach Lofton says that they are one of the best groups of student/athletes he has had the pleasure of working with here at GHS.

The girls team was lead by Kari Grippo who was the individual district champion. She was followed by Eliza Gazda who was 2nd, Mia Savino 4th, 5th Katie Buckman , 6th Elaine Gavallas, 7th Abigail Raymond, and 12th Martha Hernandez. Gulf girls will advance to the Regional meet next Saturday… The girls only scored 18 points (low scores = good), which is only 3 points away from 15 which is a perfect score in cross country.

Coach Lofton writes, “In an unexpected twist Nick Buliga ran the race of his life and defeated the clear and heavily favored Dalton Shelton from Lake Placid. Nick was first with a new personal best time of 16:26 for the 5K run. That is averaging 5:16 per mile for 3 miles. Also in 5th place was freshman James Raymond, 7th Wesley Best, 8th Mike Keller, 11th Robbie Jessup, 13th Sebastian Gazda, and 15th was Amar Reddy. Every boy on the team ran a personal best to finish 43 points ahead of second-place Frostproof.”
