In a widely reported incident on June 16, a 14-month-old baby was pulled from a canal after an adult male fell into the water while holding the baby. Sheriff’s deputies believe the adult was intoxicated and did not realize the seriousness of the situation. He was arrested on a count of aggravated child abuse. The man who jumped into the water and may have saved the baby’s life is Dimitrios Kalogiannis, a 2011 graduate of Gulf High School. Dimitri was already somewhat famous, as he retrieved the cross in the 2010 Epiphany dive. Two TV news video reports which include interviews with Dimitri are here and here.
