smith300Amanda Smith has been chosen the Gulf High School Outstanding Senior.

The selection was made by a vote of the faculty, and the announcement was made on the GHS Morning News today.

Amanda has during high school taken 18 rigorous AP/honors courses, and after school she participates in numerous sports and clubs. She has maintained a 3.9 GPA.

She is a three year varsity volleyball player, and captain representing our school as an All-Conference winner, a four year varsity soccer player, and a long jumper for track and field. She is Vice President of the Executive Board for Student Government, Vice President of National Honor Society, and a fully active member of SADD Club, Math National Honor Society, and Interact Club.

Outside of school Amanda participates in roadside clean-ups and serves families in need at Metropolitan Ministries. She is Vice President of the YMCA Leader’s Club, and because of her service to the community she was named the 2014 Volunteer of the Year.

Ms. Fugate reports that Amanda has been accepted by the National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine for the 2015-2016 school year. She received the acceptance letter recently. She can also receive college credit with completion of the program from George Mason University. Amanda will be given the opportunity to attend a 9-day program to work with other students from around the country next summer under the guidance of doctors and researchers in the biomedical field from Johns Hopkins, the CDC, Georgetown University Hospital, UCLA-David Geffen School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, etc. Ms. Fugate writes, “This is a huge educational honor for her as she is one of 12 students since 2000 from GHS who have been accepted.”
