Gulf High School is 93 years old today. This photo was taken on Sept. 18, 1922, at Community Congregational Church on Circle Blvd., where the opening exercises for Gulf High School were held. The next day, enrollment was held in the new red brick Gulf High School building that now houses Schwettman Education Center. In this photo, the old man just to the right of the entrance is Theophilus J. McBeath, the first principal of Gulf High. The taller man with the dark tie is Edwin Sidney Dew, the first assistant principal. Both men taught classes. There was only one other teacher, Miss Mabel Waring, who is presumably the woman standing next to McBeath. Our 93rd birthday today is being marked by a Fox 13 pep rally! larger photo
