Math teacher Raúl González has been named the Gulf High School Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made in an email by the Principal to the staff today (10/22).

Mr. González joined the Gulf faculty at the start of the 2011-12 school year. This year he is teaching Mathematics for College Readiness and Algebra I and I-A. He has taught in other years Algebra II and Geometry Honors, among other courses.

At Gulf he is also the sponsor of the Drama Club and the National Honor Society.

Before coming to GHS, he taught for part of a year at Gulf Middle School. Previously he had taught math at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando. He has also taught Spanish at UCF, PHSC, and Valencia College.

Mr. González has bachelor’s degrees in math and Liberal Studies and a master’s degree in Spanish Literature. He has attended UCF.

He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. English is his second language, although he began learning it in elementary school. He attended high school at Colegio Marista H. S. in Manati, Puerto Rico. He was born in San Juan. He moved to Florida at age 17 to go to college.

Among his hobbies are video games, with his current favorites being Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8.

The selection of the Teacher of the Year is made by a vote of the faculty.
